WAV and AIFF use exact PCM maths plus a standard header. Compressed formats vary by encoder; FLAC is shown as a realistic range because the audio itself affects compression.
Format comparison
The same audio in common formats
| Format | Per file | Total | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| WAV | 60.5 MB | 60.5 MB | PCM |
| FLAC | 36.3 MB | 36.3 MB | Lossless range |
| MP3 | 8.40 MB | 8.40 MB | 320 kbps |
| AAC | 8.40 MB | 8.40 MB | 320 kbps |
How WAV file size is calculated
Uncompressed PCM size is duration × sample rate × bit depth × channel count ÷ 8. A 60-second, 48 kHz, 24-bit stereo WAV therefore contains about 17.28 MB of audio, plus a small file header.
Why FLAC is only an estimate
FLAC keeps every sample but compresses predictable audio more efficiently than dense or noisy material. Two recordings with identical technical settings can therefore produce different FLAC sizes.
